There are several methods that will help you improve your position in the search engine results lists. Some are moderately complicated, but few are really difficult. We will examine one of the very easiest here.
When was the last time your home page was updated? Was it last week? If so, give yourself 10 points. How about last month? Give yourself 7 points. Did you update your list a year ago? You get 4 points. If it has been longer than a year since you last updated your home page, you get 0 points.
Worse yet, if you are using Flash on your home page, you get -5 points!
The search engines base result positioning on a number of factors. The key is determining how relevant a Web page is to the search question. The more relevant a Web page is, the higher it moves in the list of returns. One of the factors that determines the relevancy of a page is when it was last updated. The thinking is that a page that has not been updated is not current, and if it is not current it is less likely to be relevant.
Flash cannot be read by the search engines, so they ignore the pages.
What all Web pages need are a strong home page that has been recently updated with features that can be read by the search engines. We strongly suggest creating a schedule for updating you site regularly.
A good example is The Yoga Loft. Although they do not update the home page (it would probably be a good idea), they update the Calendar of Events page and Special Events page no less than four times a year. Their Who We Are and About Our Classes pages are updated as needed, often not at the same time as the other pages. This creates a site that is updated fairly often. To top off the procedure, each time a page is updated it is submitted to the search engines, although strictly speaking this is not necessary.
