JVC XL-R302BK: Definitely a Belt Problem

JVC XL-R302BK: Definitely a Belt Problem

As you probably recall, in the last post I discussed a JVC XL-R302BK CD player that was not operating correctly. Apparently, when the player is turned on the carousel rotates and the machine finds a proper “start point”, for lack of a better term. This is not unusual. Many other multi-disc CD players do something of this sort when they start up. They have to find out what discs the have. It is similar to waking up in the morning and asking, “Where am I?”

In this case we can hear a very soft sound indicating activity, but the carousel does not turn. My best guess is that the motor was spinning but the belt was slipping. This requires investigation.

The problem is that this CD player does not open up like any other I have worked on. Other CD players have metal cases that lift off a chassis thus exposing the guts of the machine. This JVC model has an all-plastic body that does not lift off, or so it seems. The good news is that I found a copy of the XL-R302BK service manual online and discovered that, indeed, the case does not lift off, but, rather, the internal parts are accessed through the bottom of the unit. A metal bottom plate lifts off.

Let the fun begin!

The JVC XL-R302BK service manual explains how easy it is to gain access to the internal components. Flipping the machine upside down and removing the screws allows the lifting off of the bottom plate exposing the parts of the machine that make it work.

Here is the belt that is causing the problems. The small black wheel is on the motor. When the motor spins, the belt drives the large capstan which, in turn, operates the carousel.

After removing the old belt for the JVC XL-R302BK you can see that it has taken on a deformed shape. It is old, dry, and slippery. Time for a new belt.
Bag of belts
The best way to buy replacement belts is to order a selection from a reliable source. Individual belts are rather expensive per piece. But, a bag of replacements is quite reasonable when calculated per piece.

After replacing the belt and dusting the interior all that is left to do is attach the bottom plate and feet, then test the machine. In the next post we will see how that test goes.
