Pioneer PD-M410 – Power We have – We Lack Music!

From the previous post you know that the first music test did not go well with the Pioneer PD-M410. What happened is that the machine moved the disc from the cartridge into the CD mechanism. The mechanism did not spin the CD.

Notice in the photo that the inside of the player is nearly pristine. This usually means that there was no reason for dust to get into the case, and it is likely that the device was not mishandled. With that in mind, there has to be something wrong with the CD playing machinery.

When a player is given the command to “Play” the mechanism checks to see if a disc is actually in the machine. If a disc is in place, the mechanism searches for a table of contents track. When that is found, the machine then plays the CD. It appears that in this case the mechanism could not confirm that a disc was ready to go.

Depending on the type of mechanism, this could mean that there is something wrong with either a sensor or with the laser itself.

Now looky, looky! When I removed the player mechanism and took a peek at the laser pickup I discovered that the lens was missing. You can see in the photo to the right that there is a round carrier-type device with a circular hole in it. This is where the lens should be.

A little online research demonstrated that missing lenses in the laser pickup mechanisms of Pioneer 6-disc machines. One fellow showed in a YouTube post how he replaced the lens after turning his machine upside down and shaking the missing lens loose.

That will be the next step. More soon!
